The deal that resolved the debt-limit stalemate had been worked out a few days before Congress voted, but since it could have blown up in our faces, it had not been announced when I appeared on NBC’s Meet the Press, which is the longest-running program on TV. I was asked to join a roundtable that included the most famous presidential historian in the country, Doris Kearns Goodwin; NBC’s chief foreign correspondent, Andrea Mitchell; former senator Chuck Hegel; and the then mayor of Newark and soon to be US senator, Cory Booker.

As the youngest by at least a decade, the least experienced, and the least well-known of the group, I felt a little like a teenager who’s finally invited to sit with the grown-ups at Thanksgiving. If I had any doubt about my status, it was immediately erased by the following exchange with host David Gregory:
